The "Wall Pass"
|
| | |
| |
|
The
"Wall Pass", also known as the "Give and Go" ,
requires precise timing and passing. Marco Etcheverry of the
DC United makes this difficult play look easy.
How It Works:
- Player 1
(dribbling the ball) draws the central defender towards
him.
- Player 2 (left
of player 1) moves into position to receive and redirect a quick
pass from player 1.
- When the
central defender commits, player 1 quickly passes to his/her
left and then sprints forward to receive the ball, which player
2 just redirected.
- Player 1
dribbles to space and takes a quick, and hopefully easy, shot on
net.

Speed,
some space,
and surprise
are the key elements to splitting the defense. |

Simple Drills: |
| Use a Wall! |
Any flat surface will do, as long as there is no
windows or other breakable items around. The inside of a
gymnasium, or running along side of a chain link fence will
produce acceptable results.
Practice bouncing the pass off the wall with the outside of
your foot, which is closest to the wall, or the inside of
your other foot. Work on finding the angle and touch that
best matches your sprint forward. Vary your sprint speed and
introduce a stutter step or fake to draw a defender to commit. |
| Work with a Friend |
Once you've mastered the wall pass by bouncing your
pass off a stationary wall, work with a teammate to redirect your
pass back into space for you. Again, timing and touch are
key for both players involved - learn from each other! |
